Singles’ Day or Bachelors’ Day is a popular entertaining (娱乐性的) holiday for young Chinese to celebrate their bachelor (单身) life. It is celebrated on November 11th. The date is chosen because of the connection between singles or bachelors and the number “1”. There is a substantial population (大量的人口) of young single men in China, contributing to the popularity (普及;流行) of the day. In order to celebrate the day, young bachelors organize parties and Karaoke (卡拉OK) to meet new friends or try their fortunes.
Origins 起源
It got the name “Singles’ Day” because the date consists of (由……
There are different ideas about the origin of day. It’s widely accepted that Singles’ Day or Bachelors’ Day was originated from universities in Nanjing during the 1990s. These college students have since graduated, and carried the university tradition into society.
Then Singles’ Day has been largely popularized in the internet era (时代) and is now a special day for all fashionable youths.
2011 marked the “Singles Day of the Century”. This date has six “ones” rather than four — an excuse to take celebrations to a higher level.
Celebration
For breakfast on Singles’ Day, singles often eat four deep-fried dough sticks(Youtiao) which represent the four “ones” of the date and one steamed stuffed bun (Baozi) which represents the middle dot of the special date.
Young people often spend their day in different ways, such as singing songs, having dinner with friends, organizing a flash mob (group of people who gather in a usually predetermined (预先决定的) location, perform some brief action, and then leave quickly) , etc.
Although this date is meant to celebrate singlehood, the desire to find a partner (伴侣) is often expressed by young Chinese on this date. Singles’ Day serves a chance for single people to party with single friends. “Blind date” parties are popular during this day in an attempt to say goodbye to their single lives.
As more people join in the celebration of this holiday, it has become a great opportunity for companies to target younger consumers of restaurants, Karaoke, and low-price online shopping malls. Shopping promotions (促销活动) and other activities are widespread throughout China. For example, a Chinese online shopping mall called Taobao sold about 19 billion yuan of their goods on November 11th, 2012.
There are two different opinions about Single’s Day. Some people say single is simple, double is trouble. They believe single means free and unbonded Others are against the Single’s Day. They think single is equal to loneliness.
In 2011, an above-average number of marital celebrations occurred in Hong Kong and Beijing on November 11th. In addition to (除了……之外) meaning “single”, the four “ones” of the date can also mean “the only one” as in “the only one for me”. Some people will use this date and this meaning to tell their special someone that they are the “the only one” in their heart. Some people choose to get married on November 12th because they want to celebrate their last Singles’ Day.
