Little is known about the disease of smallpox but nowadays older people may still be discredited because it was once one of the most devastating diseases in human history. In 1980, the World Medical Organization announced that the disease had disappeared. Since then, two laboratories in Atlanta, USA and in Moscow, the former Soviet Union, have kept some variola viruses, which are frozen in cryogenic liquid nitrogen and closely monitored, making them the world’s last smallpox virus. Over the years, experts have experimented with these viruses repeatedly. A considerable number of researchers believe that humans already know enough about the smallpox virus and need not be afraid of it.
