Based on the shallow ground stress data in the southeast part of the Korean Peninsula, the present state of stress distribution in the area and its relationship with fault distribution are given. In-situ stress data indicate that the maximum principal compressive stress in the region is in the ENE-WSW to NE-SW direction, which is consistent with the first-order mode of seismic focal mechanism solutions and the tectonic stress direction of the eastern Eurasian plate. Perhaps affected by faults, today’s stress tensors exhibit inhomogeneity in size and direction. The regional level of the main stress changes are more consistent, while the vertical changes are larger. The size of the stress field is affected by the amount of regional faults. The more the faults, the smaller the stress. This suggests that stress release may be one of the major causes of low stress. In order to verify the correctness of this assumption, we analyze the relationship between Quaternary active faults and the present stress field. In the current state of stress, the ratio of fault shear stress to normal stress is high, which is consistent with the strike-slip of most faults in the area, which means that the fault activity can maintain the current stress field.
