在印度，艾滋病病毒感染和艾滋病（ＨＩＶ／ＡＩＤＳ）的蔓延已成为一个严重的社会问题，而其中，女性性工作者及其她们的顾客构成了ＨＩＶ／ＡＩＤＳ传播的一个高危群体。通过对泰米尔·那都邦４个镇的４００女性性工作者的调查发现，女性性工作者中大多知晓ＡＩＤＳ，不少人拥有有关性病、艾滋病的正确知识，能在商业性性交易中采取安全防范措施的也占一定的比例。但就总体而言，对性病、艾滋病有误解者不在少数，未能在商业性性交易中采取安全防范措施的也占有相当的比例。因此，改变女性性工作者的行为，加强对女性性工作者的安全教育势在必行
