Since the first set X-ray area detector system of China was installed in the National Laboratory of Biomacromolecules in 1990, it has been used to collect more than twenty data sets on crystals of biomacromolecules from laboratories in China. The data sets include Rsym from 2.18% for the native insulin to 8.69% for glucose isomerase. A complete data set for a medium resolution can be collected in 24-40 h. Compared with a four-cycle diffractometer, the area detector has more obvious advantages on the speed of collection, saving crystals and quality of data. The basic principles of the area detector, the analysis of data quality and the problems of processing data for R3 space group are introduced and discussed.
