一、引言墓志历来为金石研究者所重,然而大多仅限于志文,对其装饰纹样罕有论及。墓志形制发展到盝顶式样,比起之前的砖志或小型碑状墓志、近方形石质墓志,在镌刻花纹装饰图像方面,有更加优势的整体布局空间和发挥余地。墓志纹饰是墓志的组成部分,能和墓葬中其他随葬物品相对照,更直观地反映当时丧葬精神与社会风尚。数十年前,夏鼐先生即提出,对此若能勤加搜罗,“不仅可以窥见当时艺术的风尚及其造诣,且亦可以作为断代的标准。”①本文即拟择取隋唐墓志纹饰中具有代表性的四神十二辰纹加以
