The activities of acid invertase, neutral invertase, amylase and acid phosphatase in leaves of 8 sugarcane varieties were studied at different growth stages. The results showed that the leaf acid and neutral invertase and amylase and sugarcane growth have a clear relationship. The ratio of acid invertase activity and acidity to neutral invertase activity has a close negative correlation with the sucrose content of cultivars. Therefore, it seems likely that the acid and neutral invertase activities in leaves can be used as a physiological indicator for the selection of early-heat and high-sugar varieties in early or seedling stages. The amylase activity in the leaves appears to be related not only to the variety’s growth rate but also to the heritability of the breed. However, the acid phosphatase activity of leaves varied widely among cultivars, especially between two original species (Sacharum officinarum L. and S. sapontaneum L.). However, no acid phosphatase activity was found to be related to the sucrose storage capacity of the cultivars or their growth rate.
