From the point of view of Mr. Xu Guo-zhang, we elaborate on Saussure’s discourse on arbitrariness and convention, which shows that Mr. Xu’s point of view is questionable. Then, after careful analysis of the relevant statements of Harris University of Oxford, pointed out one of the misunderstandings. Finally, by reviewing the history, we have revealed the evolution of the convention from “conventional” to “arbitrary”.
