This article is excerpted from Professor Fu Gaoyi’s new book, “Deng Xiaoping and China’s Changes,” the tenth chapter. In 1978, Deng Xiaoping paid an official goodwill visit to Japan in his capacity as the vice premier of the State Council of China and attended the ceremony of exchange of instruments of ratification of the Treaty of Peace and Friendship between China and Japan. This visit is the first visit to Japan by the top Chinese leaders since the founding of the People’s Republic of China. During the visit, Deng Xiaoping and Prime Minister Fukuda held talks on the international situation and bilateral relations; they participated in the Emperor Hirohito’s reception luncheon; attended the dinner hosted by the friendly groups of Japan and China; visited the celebrities in Japan and made important contributions to the friendship between China and Japan Of the Chinese “old friends”; attended a press conference organized by the Japanese Journalists Club and answered questions from reporters intelligently. In addition, during the visit, Deng also visited the modern enterprise of Japan and the “Shinkansen”. In the diplomatic history of New China, the Sino-Japanese relations and the subsequent reform and opening up of China, Deng Xiaoping’s visit is undoubtedly a landmark event of momentous significance.
