镇墓兽是古人想象并创造出的驱邪镇恶之神。它最早出现在春秋战国时期墓葬中,兴盛于魏晋至隋唐时期,五代以后消失。镇墓兽有兽面和人面之分,兽面镇墓兽多双角,人面镇墓兽多独角。盛唐时期的镇墓兽,肩生双翼,背有脊刺呈火焰状,有蹄形足或兽爪形足两种,蹲坐于台座上。唐代的镇墓兽在前代镇墓神物的基础上添加了更多的夸张成分,它是多种动物组合的形象,是唐代艺术匠师浪漫思想的代表作。隋唐时期镇墓兽的发展变化也是和当时的社会背景密不可分的。
