The New Scientist, Vol. 89, No. 1239 (1981) reported that the funds used in the genetic engineering of bacteria for the production of insulin may be in vain. Four scientists found that bacteria and other microbes that are most commonly used to perform these experiments have something that resembles this complex human hormone. Only those molecular biologists who did research to test for the presence or absence of insulin in E. coli K12 did not meet it.
