Schema Theory was first proposed by psychologist Bartlett in 1932 on the basis of Gestalt psychology [1]. Many people in China have extensively applied schema theory to foreign language teaching, including English reading, listening, translating and writing. However, there are few researches on the application of schema theory in literary works. This article will interpret Hawthorne’s famous novel “Goodman Brown” from the three categories of modern schema theory: linguistic schema, content schema and formal schema. (Hereinafter referred to as “Brown”) to explore its theme from a completely new perspective. In theory, it complements the application range of schema theory. From a practical perspective, the interpretation of literary works through schema theory provides a new method for the interpretation of literary works.
