Influenced by the Darwinism, people posit the notion of “meme” to explain the transmission, inheritance, and evolution of culture.Meme was considered to be the least unit of cultural information that can be transmitted from one individual to another. In the paper, the author has given a brief introduction to the origin of memetics and different definitions of meme by different scholars, based upon which the author then give his own definition of meme as “a least cognitive or behavioral information structure that can be transmitted from one individual to another”.At the same time the author has given some description of the characters of meme, then the author conducted a case analysis of rumors,an extreme case of language expression, and applied the theory to the study of the rapid and wide spread of the rumors about SARS.Further on,the author points out that language as the embodiment of culture can also be approached from the perspectives of memetics and gives a trial analysis of language from the memetic point of view.
