GE Transportation has developed a new line of diesel engines to meet the challenges of high-power, low-weight and new emissions requirements for light-duty vehicles. The first member of the series diesel engine for the 16-cylinder machine, the aircraft rated power at 1500r / min 2750kW. Future models include a 12-cylinder engine with a rated power of 2060kW, which is used to generate electricity from ships. The PowerHaul engine evolved from the successful 6 Series Jenbacher gas engine. It maintains the strength of the latter while applying the latest fuel injection, turbocharging and combustion system technologies. High-pressure common rail systems have the flexibility to optimize the trade-off between NOx emissions and fuel consumption while minimizing particulate emissions. The engine uses a high pressure ratio and the single stage supercharger supplies air to support a modest Miller cycle combustion system. Using a modest Miller cycle intake valve closure keeps the turbocharger simple to match with a conventional valve train while maintaining good acceleration and low power performance. The combustion process was simulated and calibrated on a single cylinder test machine to evaluate several combinations of piston head, valve timing, supercharger ratio and fuel nozzle geometry. This makes it possible to create just one set of multi-cylinder hardware and directly meet the power, emissions and fuel consumption goals. The 16-cylinder engine has been certified to EU EUIIIa emission standards. The basic structure of the engine was modified to work closely with the main generator of the locomotive and to drive the oil and cooling pumps required for the locomotive cooling system. The engine is mounted resiliently inside the locomotive and, in addition to the shock load encountered in locomotive applications, also reduces vibration transmission. Through a wide range of component and engine durability tests, the entire engine and its major components have proven to be used for locomotive operations. The engine allows speeding 10%, overload 20%. In addition, a special load cycle test was also performed on the engine to make it capable of operating high cycle vehicles. The first application of the 16-cylinder PowerHaul engine will be on a PH37ACmi locomotive for the British Railways. In the light locomotive market, the engine represents a new standard in power, emissions, traction and fuel consumption.
