甜竹粗生快长，是一种投资少、收益快、效益高的热带、亚热带经济作物。海南具有适宜于甜竹生长的气候、土壤条件，发展甜竹生产具有很大的潜力．目前的种植、加工技术和销售能力已初具规模，建议抓住改革开放的良好机遇，在现有基础上进一步扩大生产规模，生产具有较强竞争力的甜竹产品，繁荣市场，出口创汇，增加农民收入，发展农村经济，使贫困地区的农民尽快走上脱贫致富道路。
