土家人跳花灯,唱小调,伴着音乐,踩着鼓点,边唱边舞,优雅风趣,多姿多彩。每年正月初三至十五,一到傍晚花灯队就打起灯笼,敲响锣鼓,走村串寨或登门到户进行拜年活动。花灯队每到一处,首唱《观灯》,祝愿人们新年吉祥、百事如意。继嗝《道贺词》,向主人道贺新喜,行拜年礼。再唱《开财门》,祝贺主人家业兴旺,恭喜发财。后唱《祝寿歌》,祝愿主人家的老人健康长寿,儿孙团圆。离开时,主人家会高兴地给唱花灯的人打发赏钱或赠以香烟水果。于是,又有了《谢主》一节。正月十五晚上要举行送灯烧灯仪式,一年一度的新春花灯活动到此结束。
