The short story “Lowland” is the early postmodern work of Thomas Pynchon. From the “lowlands” can be glimpsed American cities in the 1950s and 1960s are being hit and destroyed by industrial civilization, impetuous people in this invasion has become depressed. In quick-success, materialistic cities, owner Dennis Frankie fled into a huge junk-filled world of vagrants and gypsies. The abandoned world regarded as “blank ” and “garbage ” is more simple and natural, more open, more harmonious and more viable than the cold cities. Lowlands leads the way for people to search for the mystical and unobstructed human-to-people communication in the world of Abandoning the People, and to explore how mankind can find its way in the post-modern wasteland society.
