摄影是一种“观看”的活动,也是一种“观看”的媒介。薛挺在2003年展出的《动物参考》摄影作品,是他在探寻个人主观风格和表现主义道路上的又一次尝试,是一次疯狂地“看”。他因晃动而模糊的画面,打破了“美”的观看标准;他对动物园中动物生存状态的关注,抛开了以往将动物作为欣赏符号的习惯;他通过表现动物园中动物被自然边缘化的痛苦,思索人性以及人与自然的关系。
