北京外国语大学英语系的资深教授陈德彰先生是本刊热心读者之一。最近他给本刊寄来一信,专谈英语介词Of的问题。他认为Bill Hofmann教授在1999年第10期在本刊的一篇文章中写下的English for Science and TechnologyLearning不是一时的疏忽,而是事出有因。他建议本刊把封面上的English ofScience and Technology Learning改过来。我们在接到陈教授的来稿之后,突然想到,美国教授Bill虽远在大洋彼岸,但同时近在咫尺,不过a few clicks away!于是,我们把陈教授的观点及时发给了Bill,他很快就给我们发来了一则Email。他并不同意陈教授的观点,认为他把《科技英语学习》写成了EnglishFOR Science and Technology Learning是incorrectly,他认为本刊正确的英语表达是:English of Science and Technology Learning。但同时,他又认为English forScience and Technology Learning并非错误,而是体现了不同的侧重点而已。我们在发表陈教授的来稿的同时,发表Bill教授的Email全文。供读者对比阅读。我们感谢陈教授的来稿,他严谨的治学精神值得我们学习! Professor Chen Dezhang, a senior professor of the English Department of Beijing Foreign Studies University, is one of the enthusiastic readers of the journal. Recently he sent a letter to the journal to discuss the issue of the English preposition, Of. He believes that the English for Science and Technology Learning, which Professor Bill Hofmann wrote in an article in this issue of the magazine in the tenth issue of 1999, is not a momentary negligence but a cause. He suggested that the journal change the English ofScience and Technology Learning on the cover. After we received Professor Chen’s contribution, we suddenly thought that Bill, the American professor, was far away from the ocean, but at the same time, but a few clicks away! So we sent Professor Chen’s views to Bill in a timely manner. He quickly sent us an email. He did not agree with Professor Chen’s point of view that he wrote “English for Science and Technology” as EnglishFOR Science and Technology Learning is correct. He thinks that the correct English expression of this publication is: English of Science and Technology Learning. At the same time, he also believes that English for Science and Technology Learning is not an error, but reflects a different focus. While publishing the contribution of Prof. Chen, we published the full text of Prof. Bill’s email. For the reader to read and compare. We thank Professor Chen for his contribution. His rigorous research spirit is worth learning.
