Objective To investigate the clinical significance of serum interleukin-6 (IL-6) and interleukin-12 (IL-12) expression in children with hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) complicated with viral encephalitis (VE) Methods Totally 62 children with HFMD complicated with VE were collected as the observation group. Fifty children with HFMD excluding central nervous system diseases were collected as the control group. Fifty healthy children were enrolled as the healthy control group, Serum was assayed for IL-6 and IL-12. Results Serum levels of IL-6 and IL-12 in the observation group were significantly higher than those in the control group and the healthy control group. The levels of IL-6 and IL-12 in the control group were significantly higher than those in the healthy control group. The levels of serum IL-6 and IL-12 in the observation group were closely related to whether they were associated with seizures. The serum levels of IL-6 and IL-12 in the observation group were positively correlated. Conclusions IL-6 and IL-12 are highly expressed in the serum of HFMD patients with VE, which play an important role in the development of the disease. Combined detection of IL-6 and IL-12 expression may be an objective indicator of early brain damage assessment One of the important values for early identification of critically ill patients.
