The issue of the location of economic activity has always been of concern to policy makers, but has been neglected in economic theory. The new economic geography theory (NEG) pioneered by Krugman (1991) and others in the 1990s can be seen as a re-examination of the spatial dimensions of economic activity. Different from the traditional economic theory, the NEG theoretical model provides a completely new analytical perspective for the formulation of regional policies. Since the reform and opening up, the economic gap between regions has been expanding day by day and the formulation of regional economic policies has drawn more and more attention. However, there is often no theoretical guidance in the formulation of regional policies. By analyzing the basic characteristics and policy implications of NEG theory, this paper provides a reference for the formulation of China’s regional policy.
