直接喷射式柴油机的燃烧室一般都设在活塞顶上,呈ω型或盆形,这是通过大量试验所得到的正确形状。其目的在于加强进气涡流,使油粒和空气在很小的燃烧室空间中形成混合气体,然后迅速在活塞顶处实现燃烧。除了在MAN的M系统中喷油器是位于燃烧室的一侧外,一般都置于燃烧室的中央。燃油在燃烧室壁上形成油膜,然而在很低的温度下蒸发。
