To investigate the detection of TTV (Transfusion transmitted virus) infection in patients with unexplained hepatitis and its clinical significance. The primers of TTVORF1 were designed to detect nested polymerase chain reaction (Nested-PCR). TTVNA was detected in serum of 50 patients with unexplained hepatitis, 40 healthy controls and 30 HBV carriers. The clinical data of TTVDNA-positive hepatitis patients were compared feature. TTV DNA was detected in 16 out of 50 cases of unidentified hepatitis (32%), which was significantly higher than that of normal healthy population (2/40%, 5%) and hepatitis B virus carriers (2/30, 67% (P <0.05). Of the 16 TTVDNA positive patients, chronic hepatitis accounted for the majority (12/16, 75.5%), showing repeated and persistent ALT abnormalities. The prevalence of TTV in patients with unidentified hepatitis was significantly higher than that in other populations, which may be the causative agent of hepatitis with unexplained hepatitis in the region
