The species and distribution of protective plants in the seashore of Jiangnan in the Qing Dynasty are the result of a combination of natural selection, social and human factors. Economic benefits drove some of the pond managers and offshore residents to ban the cultivation of certain plants that are detrimental to seawall protection, which is beneficial to the habitat of termites. The time between the cavers’ death on the seawall and the sewer’s senescence and storm surge are not synchronized, leaving their destruction of the seawall persistent. The contradiction between the termites’ destructive power and seabed borrowing shows the dilemma of seawall protection. The fuel problem has added to the difficulty of managing seawalls and their protective plants. The connection between plant, animal and human indicates that the protection of Jiangnan sea-pond in Qing Dynasty is a complicated issue of ecological interaction
