近幾年來,英若誠成爲北京文藝界最忙的人物之一;約他聊天,已不再是一件容易事了。但是,筆者有幸於二月十九日晚間,在北京首都劇場後台的一間會客室裏同他暢談。當時,劇場正在演出他不久前翻譯、導演(與另一位中年導演林兆華合導)的《上帝的寵兒》(又譯《莫扎特之死》。這是在他建議下,北京人民藝術劇院决定‘引進’的一齣具有高難度的西方優秀剧目。那晚七點正,當劇場的大幕升起,满懷懺悔之情、以謀殺烏爾佛岡·阿馬德烏斯·莫扎特而遗臭萬年的安東尼奥·薩烈瑞(維也納十八世紀的宫廷作曲家)出现在舞台的延伸部份時,英若誠和他的夫人吳世良(目前正在同丈夫合譯美籍華裔作家包柏漪的長篇小說《春月》)才從劇場來到後台。據英若誠告知,他刚刚安排美國驻華大使洛德和夫人包柏漪入座觀劇。早已聽說,英若誠夫婦翻譯長篇《春月》,是得到作者的信赖與充分合作的。作者一直懷着殷切的期待,敦促英若誠夫婦早日完成一部完美可讀、信實可靠的譯本。
