It sounds just like a modern fairytale.
A winegrower from France who delivers his Bordeaux to a small elaborate circle of clients is leading a happy life. His wine may never be as famous as a Mouton Rothschild, but so be it. Then, one day, everything changes: The winegrower checks his emails. He suddenly finds hundreds of orders from overseas—mainly from Japan. He’s puzzled, and his amazement grows as he finds out the reasons behind his sudden rise to fame.
Bordeaux—music to the ears of wine lovers across the world. Its name symbolizes the French way of life and indulgence. But you wouldn’t necessarily connect Bordeaux with modern comic culture. Anyone visiting the 1)Manga K Café is in for a surprise. The café offers all kinds of Japanese 2)cult comics known as “manga.” In some of them, Bordeaux has been raised to unlikely prominence—or, at least, Bordeaux wine has. In the manga series Kami no Shizuku—The Drops of God,the heroes are on the trails of the world’s best wines.
In addition, The Drops of God also made a little-known winemaker, Jean-Pierre Amoreau into a celebrity. Amoreau was 3)oblivious to the attention at first. Japan’s 4)legion of manga fans made him into a cult hero after the writers had a taste of his wine and loved it.
Amoreau: (via translator) We only found out later. It was a lovely surprise for us all, the family, the employees. We do what we can to make the best wine possible. And that was picked up by these comics.
Although Amoreau’s wine—called Cháteau le Puy—always had its fans, it never featured among the big names in Bordeaux wines. In Japan, at least, that’s all changed. Manga artists copied Amoreau’s face from his company’s website, and turned him into a star.
Amoreau: (via translator) When I go to Japan now, people recognize me on the subway and have their photos taken with me. I don’t mind; it’s fun and I’m honoured. But it is amusing—after all, I’m just a winemaker.
