The purpose of this study was to find a potential source of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) that flowed into the Gulf of Riga, a part of the Baltic Sea. PCBs, DDT and related compounds, hexachlorobenzene (HCB), dichlorophenylsulfone (BCPS) and two kinds of hexachlorocyclohexane were detected quantitatively in the perch in the Daugava and Liebelpepe rivers in Latvia (HCH) isomer. The pollution of PCBs in Liberia is likely to come from the urban area of Yelgava. Further concentration of BCPS was detected in the lower Liebelhup from 53ng / g to 160ng / g of fat weight (1.w.). The local sources of p, p’-DDT and HCHs appear to constitute the background pollution of the Daugava River downstream of the Riga capital. The concentration of organochlorine in the perch has the same range as that reported in the body of the perch in other contaminated areas of the Baltic Sea; for example, it has been determined that the PCB content is 250-1100 ng / g1.w.
