April 23 this year marks the 400th anniversary of the birth of William Shakespeare, the great playwright and poet of the Renaissance in Great Britain. When we commemorate the man whom Marx praised as “the greatest genius of human beings” and his “favorite poet,” we recall that Shakespeare’s name was introduced to China far more than 100 years ago. Over 50 years ago, his dramatic productions have also started to be translated into Chinese and onto the Chinese arena. For many years they have never ceased to exist. Shakespeare is not only one of the foreign classic writers loved by the Chinese people, but also one of the foreign playwrights who has had a significant influence on the Chinese drama movement. Now take this opportunity to commemorate his translation and circulation of his dramatic and poetic works in China.
