France’s orchid battlefield surveillance system is similar in some respects to the United States Air Force / Army Joint STARS. The former is installed on the “Super Puma” MK.2 helicopter; the latter uses the modified Boeing 707, which has longer range and longer battery life. Jonit STARS has a high cruising altitude, so the range of the radar is also far away. Orchids operate on one’s own side with the frontiers and battlefields. However, to further reduce the probability of being destroyed by enemy fires, their radars will not work intermittently in “bursts” until the system reaches a high level. The French Ministry of Defense is currently studying “Orchid” production contracts with a preliminary plan to produce 20 helicopters and six ground stations for the French Army, hoping to begin delivery from 1996 to 1997.
