Waiting for the Barbarian is the 2003 novel by the Nobel Prize laureate - J.M.Cutcher’s first novel. The novel adopts the same narrative method as the story itself to reveal the essence of barbarity and cruelty of the imperialism and lead readers to profoundly reflect on civilization and barbarism. The conflict between civilization and barbarism is one of the major themes of the novel. By disagreeing with the “overthrow of civilizations” on the “imperial civilizations” by the chief executive of the town, one can experience that Coetzee’s use of tricks in thematic functions of characters in shaping such a figure has reached a point of no repair. Beginning with the construction of the chief executive of the town, interpret the theme function it plays in the construction of the theme of the novel.
