太谷学派遵循“命由师传”的规范。宗师周太谷死后 ,传弟子李龙川为南宗、张积中为北宗。后张积中在黄崖教案中死难 ,没有指定传人 ,其未遇难弟子星散而以朱玉川为自然领袖。李龙川遗命弟子黄葆年“承嗣北宗”。朱玉川等黄崖孑遗即按“命由师传”的规范予以尊奉 ,1898年到 190 0年间黄葆年完成南北合宗 ,190 2年辞职 ,同年归群草堂创立 ,学派进入“黄门”时代。其间黄崖孑遗中唯虞季升一人曾怀不同意见 ,受到朱玉川的劝说和教诫而终于服膺。而方宝川《蒋文田及其著述》一文论黄葆年出任学派山长系由弟子“共推” ,则属误解文献所致
