Objective To study the levels of blood and urinary endothelin (PET, UET) and their correlation in children with renal disease. Methods Serum and urinary levels of ET and ANP were measured in 72 children with nephrotic syndrome (NS), glomerulonephritis (GN) and renal failure (RF) by radioimmunoassay. Results The PET and UET values in NS, GN and RF groups were significantly higher than those in control group, especially in RF group (P <005, P <0.01). ANP values were significantly higher in the GN and RF groups than in the control group (P <001). 8 patients with ARF convalescent blood levels of ET decreased, 6 cases of CRF despite treatment, but the blood level of ET does not decrease or increase. Conclusions ET may play an important role in the pathogenesis and progression of pediatric kidney disease. The value of ET may be related to the severity and prognosis.
