The latest draft curve design provides the operator with an effective method of design that does not require a bottomhole assembly to be struck and hits a horizontal target within a specified tolerance. It is based on the initial tangent curve made by Elf Aquitaine. According to the simple tangent design method (see Figure 1), the bevel curve consists of two bevel sections and a bevel straight section of the bevel section. Depending on the performance of the maneuvering motor used, a minimum radius of curvature and shorter bevel segments are used to allow the directional operator to drill precisely to the initial kick-off point of the second bevel segment. In the second slant section, the same slanting motor used in the first slant section is used, so that the operator can determine the depth of the second slant point according to the working condition of the motor at the first slant section.
