有一个人,他对麦克斯韦电磁学理论持怀疑态度。因为他认为麦克斯韦的理论内部有矛盾,比如说,位移电流的存在就有点多余。此外,他还认为麦克斯韦的理论没有实验基础。由此而言,他推崇赫姆霍兹的理论,因为它可以从经典实验中推导出来,而且赫姆霍兹的理论比麦克斯韦的理论更具一般性、普遍性。因为赫姆霍兹的理论包含两个任意的参数,适当选择这些参数。就可以证明麦克斯韦理论是赫姆霍兹理论的一个特例。
