海棠正常开花一般在4～5月,因其花开似锦、喜庆吉祥,近年来人们通过催花使其在春节期间开放,以增加节日气氛。充分春化海棠具有喜阳、耐寒、抗旱的特性,其开花要有一定的需冷量。盆栽海棠催花可在9～10月间选择合适植株移植盆中,放置在室内阴凉通风处养护一段时间,待其适应后放在室外向阳处正常管理,以满足其需冷量,孕育花蕾。如不经低温春化,在温室栽培则少开花甚至不开花。
