Objective: To understand the prevalence of overweight and obesity in primary and secondary school students in Xinyang City, and to provide the basis for the development of students’ obesity prevention and control measures. Methods: In 2007, 2449 Han students aged 7-18 who were born and raised in Xinyang urban area were selected using the simple random sampling principle, including 1220 boys and 1229 girls. The thickness of skinfold of the triceps and subscapular horn of the students was measured. Body fat density was calculated by calculating the bodyfold thickness, and then body fat content was used to judge the obesity rate. The gender difference was compared with U test of large sample. Results: The body fat content of female students increased with age, while the male students reached a peak at 11 years of age, showing a gradual downward trend, with no growth curve of men and women. And body fat content of the same age group is higher than boys, and in addition to 11-year-old age group, the other age groups were statistically significant (U> 1.96, P <0.05). The total number of non-obese, overweight, mild obesity and moderate-to-severe obesity boys at 7-18 years old was 64.6%, 12.2%, 10.5% and 12.7% respectively, and girls were 65.7%, 10.9%, 10.7% and 12.6% Statistical test showed no significant difference (χ2 = 1.075, P> 0.05). Conclusion: The prevalence of overweight and obesity in primary and secondary school students in Xinyang is generally high. Prevention of primary and secondary school obesity should gradually become the focus of school health work in the future.
