薛福成(1838—1894),字叔耘,号庸盦,江苏无锡人。中国清末外交官,改良主义政论家。薛氏一生著作甚丰,其文言小说创作则以《庸盦笔记》为代表。是书为作者从同治四年至光绪十七年间中删存编辑而成,表面来看,该书并不出色,但如果把它放到中国近代化的漫长历程中考察,就可以发现薛福成是最前沿的小说改良的先行者,他用小说为宣传改良主义思想张本,这种做法直接启发了梁启超,1902年梁启超在《新小说》上发表著名的《论小说与群治之关系》,意在使小说成为
