Thanks to an equalizer, similar to what is now called a fidelity filter, it achieves good results at far-distance amplifying, helping to promote its use and subsequent abuse. Since several generations of sound engineers had little or no understanding of the effects of equalizers on sound, it is not surprising that using equalizers in such situations would produce unsatisfactory sound results.
