中山大学图书情报学系创建于1980年,是当时国内成立较早的几个图书情报学系之一,她开始为图书馆学专科,后称为图书馆学系,至1988月4日正式改为现名——图书情报学系。在南国最高学府中山大学这座风景秀丽的康乐园里,图书情报学系是一个年轻而生气勃勃的系科。该系创办以来,经过几年的艰苦努力,不断发展壮大,今已初具规模。目前这个系的教学和科研基地已经形成,并涌有一批以50年代末、60年代初图书情报学专业毕业的既有广泛实践知识又有丰富教学经验、造诣较高的中年学者为核心的朝气蓬勃的教师队伍和科研队伍。全系现有教职工40人,其中教授1人,副教授11人、讲师11人、教员9人,行政和教辅人员8人(其中含一位副研究馆员)。多年来由该系教师主编、参加撰写并出版的著作 Founded in 1980, Sun Yat-sen Library and Information Science was one of the earliest library and library science departments in the country.
