张谦宜《絸斋诗谈》保留了其师杨师亮及其本人的诗说,其特点是以文法讲诗,或不免流于细碎,但也形成思理详密的长处,既长于阐释通行的诗学概念,也善于揭示诗作运用的技法,与王渔洋神韵论所代表的山东诗学主流殊为异趣,可以说是明代格调派到乾隆间沈德潜格调诗学的一个桥梁,是格调诗学在清初的守护者和承传者。
