本文针对当前不同程度存在的对思想政治教育是否还是一切工作的生命线的疑虑，以及自觉或不自觉地轻视与忽视思想政治教育的倾向，重申了“生命线”的论断，并从“服务”和“保证”方面概括了“生命线”的科学内涵，廓清对“生命线”的曲解。较系统地阐述了党的思想政治工作产生、形成和发展的过程，突出阐明思想政治教育这一中心环节对实现党在现代化建设中的领导作用，对搞好经济建设这一中心任务的保证作用以及对社会主义精神文明建设的聚焦作用．强调当前高校思想政治教育的中心内容是用有中国特色社会主义理论武装学生，使高校成为精神文明建设的基地和辐射源。
