渝怀铁路西起重庆枢纽襄渝铁路,两跨长江、嘉陵江,三跨乌江,携酉、秀、黔、彭,经贵州铜仁进入湖南省,在怀化枢纽湘黔铁路怀化站接轨,一线挽三省(市),天堑变通途。线路全长625会里,概算总额198.4亿元,其中重庆境内464会里,投资130亿元,贵州境内95公里,湖南境内67公里。全线控制工程有8隧、2桥、1站共计11项,全部集中在重庆市境内。沿线地形、地质复杂,桥隧工程量大,其总长占全线长度的50.6%,7公里以上隧道8座,最长的圆梁山隧道为11.068公里。渝怀铁路设计通过能力为:初期32对,近期36对,远期42对。设计输送能力为:初期客车13对,货运736万叱;近期客车14对,货运901万叱;远期17对,货运1010万吨。建设总工期五年,2000年底开工,2005年建成通车。其中怀化到酉阳段计划三年半内铺通,并提前开展临时运营管理。
