Prof. Dr. Zuhair A. Munir, Associate Dean of Postgraduate Affairs of the University of California, Davis, Professor of the University of California, Davis, was invited to write an article for this journal to our material science workers, especially the powder metallurgy. Workers, introduce a new method of preparation of materials - self-propelled high-temperature synthesis. Self-propelled high temperature synthesis, also known as combustion synthesis, is a process for making materials that has been developed in the past two decades. It has attracted a great deal of interest from the international material community. Professor Munir graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1956. Master’s and doctoral degrees in materials science at the school. In 1975, he was honored as an outstanding educator in the United States; in 1982 and 1985, his scientific research was awarded twice by the National Science Foundation’s Innovation Award. He was also selected by the American Engineering Confederation as an outstanding engineer and included in the list of outstanding engineers. Professor Munir was a member of the Judging Panel of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Sciences, and the U.S. Department of Energy. He is currently Chairman of the High-Temperature Materials Branch of the American Electrochemical Society, a special editor of the Journal of the Electrochemistry Society and a reviewer of nine scientific magazine articles. Professor Munir has served as a consultant for several industrial and government agencies including International Business Machines Corporation (IBM), Rockwell International, General Electric (GE) and the California Energy Commission. Currently, he is an advisor to Livermore National Laboratory. Prof. Munir has published more than 120 papers. His research area includes surface phenomena, thermodynamics and kinetics of phase transition, in addition to the hyperthermia synthesis. This article is translated by Zhang Shuge, the Institute of Light Source Materials, Nanjing Institute of Light Industry. The translation will be published in the next issue. Comrade Zhang Shuge is currently engaged in the research of high-temperature synthesis of sorghum under the guidance of Prof. Munir.
