This article was written at a time when mining in Europe is once again concerned about the control of thermal damage. The high degree of mechanization, greater depth of production and the need to improve the production environment are forcing mining engineers to re-evaluate the thermal and humidity problems in mines. Over the past 50 years, South Africa’s gold mining industry has gained experience in improving the production environment of hot and humid mines unmatched by other mining industries. This paper has four main sections: (a) heat and moisture problems in modern mines; (b) physiological responses to human exposure to high temperatures and developed technologies for high temperature adaptation; (c) control of high temperatures, Highlighting air cooling technologies and current South African practices in this area; (d) A brief discussion on ventilation balance and the application of air-cooling conditions.
