According to the American urologist Gillespie, the etiology of interstitial cystitis (IC, also known as Hunner’s ulcer) is sometimes caused by the antibiotics used to treat it. Medical textbooks say the disease is a rare, untreatable disease in older women. Gillespie confirmed that it is not a disease but rather a few disorders, the most common of which is caused by antibiotics in the absence of infection. She noted that many women reported that their physicians had opened antibiotics for suspected cystitis. When the symptoms of bladder burns increase after treatment, physicians generally re-open a stronger antibiotic, causing more painful symptoms. Gillespie’s two-year study found that the inside surface of the bladder protects the bladder tissue from uric acid attack, and when the protective barrier is damaged, the patient can feel bladder burning, pressure or cramping.
