Valvo and Siemens detailed the progress of the “megabit project” at the 1986 autumn press conference. The plan was officially funded by the governments of West Germany and the Netherlands. In the 480 million West German mark of funding, the German Federal Ministry of Research and Technology (BMFT) funded 320 million marks, and the Dutch government issued 160 million marks. The Siemens and Philips/Valvo companies (Elcoma Components Division) participating in this project each received DM 240 million, which is roughly 30% of the total development cost (the total development cost for each company is around 800 million marks). The two companies jointly engaged in research and development of static 1Mbit (S-RAM) and dynamic 4Mbit read-write memory (D-RAM). The complexity of the two devices
