在其“9·11小说定义之作”《坠落的人》中,美国文坛名宿德里罗将“9·11”恐怖袭击阐释为对男主人公男性气概的阉割,并推而广之认为是对整个美利坚民族自信心和自豪感的阉割去势。本文认为,通过表征男主人公所受创伤,小说有效地回应了恐怖主义给美国男性身份认同与男子气概建构带来的危机。以德里罗为代表的美国作家颠覆男性气概神话的书写作为一种文学范式,为“9·11”叙事提供了新的维度,使得危机时期的美国文学界免于简单英雄叙事的泛滥。
