The Sino-French War took place in the first decade of the Sino-Japanese War. For Japan, this war can be regarded as the best time to observe the Chinese military forces after the new self-reliance and to say that it is a pre-war exercise in Japan before the Sino-Japanese War. Most people think Japan’s aggressive ambition toward China began when the Peony Society incident in 1874. The author believes Japan’s overall challenge to China’s hegemony in East Asia should be stimulated by the Sino-French war and speeding up its invasion of China’s mainland policy. The Sino-French war of cauda equina during the Sino-French war also contributed to the far-reaching impact of the Japanese naval tactics used in the Sino-French War. The final result of the Sino-French War also turned the Japanese public opinion in the Meiji era from a dispute over “Asia Asia” and “Asia-Asia Theory” to a diplomatic idea of “Asia-Asia Theory.”
