Objective To investigate the relationship between serum matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) and carotid atherosclerosis in patients with acute cerebral infarction. Methods 82 patients with acute cerebral infarction hospitalized in the Second People’s Hospital of Guiyang from November 2011 to November 2012 were selected as the cerebral infarction group. According to the results of carotid ultrasonography, the patients with cerebral infarction were divided into unstable carotid artery plaque Block group 40 cases, carotid stable plaque group 25 cases, no plaque group 17 cases; the other in the same period in Guiyang City Second People’s Hospital 40 cases of physical examination as a control group. The plaque detection and serum MMP-9 levels in each group were observed. Results The detection rate of plaque in patients with cerebral infarction was 79.3%, which was higher than that in the control group (20.0%, P <0.05). The level of MMP-9 in unstable plaque group was (609.46 ± 253.42) mg / L, in stable plaque group was (483.12 ± 201.13) mg / L, in non-plaque group was (294.38 ± 150.23) mg / Group was (178.54 ± 101.67) mg / L. The level of serum MMP-9 in unstable plaque group was higher than that in stable plaque group, no plaque group and control group (P <0.05), and the level of MMP-9 in stable plaque group was higher than that in non-plaque group and control group (P <0.05). The serum MMP-9 level in patients without plaque was higher than that in control group (P <0.05). Conclusion Serum MMP-9 levels are associated with carotid atherosclerosis in patients with acute cerebral infarction.
