应读者的要求,本刊从本期起增设世界文化史讲座,以帮助读者系统地了解世界文化的发展过程;每期一讲,自成段落。材料依次译自范隆的《人类的故事》(The Story of Mankind)。亨德里克·威廉·范隆(Hendrik Willem Van Loon,1882-1944)为美国历史学家、传记作者、新闻工作者和讲师,曾以《人类的故事》(1921)一书于1922年荣获纽伯里奖章(Newbery medal)。他还写过许多儿童读物并为这些读物作插图,这些读物也很受成年人的欢迎,其中包括《船》(1935);《古人》(1920);《圣经的故事》(1923);《宽容》(1925);《美洲》(1927);《范隆地理》(1932);《艺术史话》(1937);《范隆生物》(1942)以及《托马斯·杰斐逊》(1943)。 1905年俄国革命时期,范隆在俄国任新闻记者,在1906年和第一次世界大战期间,他在欧洲各国从事新闻报道工作。在第二次世界大战期间,他为美国和荷兰写稿并广播。范隆出生于荷兰的鹿特丹,于二十岁时到美国。他毕业于康奈尔大学和慕尼黑大学。——编者
At the request of the readers, this issue of International Culture Lectures extends from this issue to help readers understand systematically the process of world culture development. Each issue consists of one passage and one passage. The material is in turn translated from Van Loon’s “The Story of Mankind.” Hendrik Willem Van Loon (1882-1944), an American historian, biographer, journalist and lecturer, won New York’s title in 1922 with The Story of Mankind (1921) Newbury Medal. He also wrote many children’s books and illustrated these books, which are also very popular among adults, including The Boat (1935), The Ancients (1920), The Bible’s Tale (1923) Catholicism “(1925);” America “(1927);” Geography of Vailon “(1932);” Art History “(1937);” Villon Biology “(1942); and” Thomas Jefferson "(1943). In 1905, during the Russian Revolution, Van Long was a journalist in Russia. In 1906 and during the First World War, he undertook news reports in various European countries. During the Second World War he wrote and broadcast for the United States and the Netherlands. Fan Long was born in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, at the age of 20 to the United States. He graduated from Cornell University and the University of Munich. --editor
